About

Wide Arches is the debut singer-songwriter project of Toronto musician, Jacob Gorzhaltsan. The group was formed during the pandemic lockdowns when performance opportunities ground to a sudden halt. Realizing the importance of interconnection to the creative process, Jacob and the band began collaborating by way of online remote-recording.

In 2021, Wide Arches were fortunate to be awarded a grant from the Toronto Arts Council to record their first full-length album, "Farewell to All the Lovely Things"  which was released on September 12th.

Weaving a tapestry of images and emotions, the lyrical content of the band is both playful and introspective, while the music displays a rich array of folk sounds and acoustic instrumentation. The band draws influence from singer-songwriter greats such as Nick Drake, Harry Nilsson, and Leonard Cohen, as well as more contemporary songwriters such as Andy Shauf, Daniel Rossen, and Blake Mills.

There are few better musical storytellers that I’ve reviewed than Jacob Gorzhaltsan. With his Wide Arches project, he’s created a dark world that seems to mirror our own all too strikingly, peopled it, and brought it to life through thoughtful, atmospheric instrumental arrangements. Put simply, it’s a wonder.” - Graeme Smith

York Calling

Melodically caressing arrangements, with acoustics and strings a driving force, complement a poetic lyrical prowess — holding a particular emphasis on the day-to-day things in life that both easily break and make you smile, as conveyed in the gorgeous ‘Ballerina'. ” - Mike Mineo

Obscure Sound

Wide Arches' debut album, "Farewell to All the Lovely Things," serves as a multi-faceted mirror reflecting both the artist Jacob Gorzhaltsan's personal growth and the universality of human experience. In a time when many were isolated and disconnected, Gorzhaltsan reached across the void to create a rich tapestry of sound and emotion. The 12-track, 42-minute album is both a musical journey and a testament to human resilience and creativity”

B-Side Guys

A thoughtful and pragmatic collection of stories that grow only more remarkable the more you return to them for another listen, styled in the similar tones of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and even hints of Canadian east-coast sea-straddlers like Ben Caplan.”

Wide Arches with Good Fortune

(EST, UTC-05) (EST, UTC-05)

Burdock Music Hall, 1184 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON

Join indie folk band Wide Arches at Burdock Music Hall, along with opening band Good Fortune.

Toronto indie-folk band Wide Arches formed during the pandemic through remote-recording collaborations and released their first album on September 12th, 2023 (with the support of the Toronto Arts Council). Weaving a tapestry of images and emotions, the lyrical content of the band is both playful and introspective, while the music displays a rich array of folk sounds and acoustic instrumentation. The band’s influences include singer-songwriter classics such as Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Harry Nilsson and Tom Waits — as well as more contemporary folks artists like Daniel Rossen, Andy Shauf and Damien Jurado.

Good Fortune, the brainchild of Toronto/Kingston musician and songwriter Kelsey McNulty, creates a cinematic collage of sound both new and old. With an affection for the ‘60s French pop of Francoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg, to space pop revivalists like Broadcast and Air – McNulty delivers her intimate vocal stylings (in both English and French) over intentional layers of dreamy synth and an airtight rhythm section.

Wide Arches ALBUM RELEASE feat. Prince Enoki & mystery tea

 — (EDT, UTC-04) — (EDT, UTC-04)

Small World Centre, 180 Shaw Street, Toronto, ON

The debut album by indie-folk band, Wide Arches, will be released on all streaming services AND physical CD format on Tuesday, Sept. 12th! Come celebrate with us that very evening at Small World Centre.

Wide Arches is the singer-songwriter project of Toronto musician, Jacob Gorzhaltsan and was formed during the pandemic lockdowns. Over the past three years, the band has been working on a full album of remotely-recorded music, produced with the generous support of the Toronto Arts Council. They are thrilled to finally be releasing this music to the public for the first time. Playful but introspective, the melodic content of the band draws influences from early artists like Nick Drake, Harry Nillson, and Leonard Cohen, as well as more contemporary songwriters such as Andy Shauf, Daniel Rossen, and Blake Mills. With lyrics that paint vivid imagery, drawing creative inspiration from the snap-shots of day-to-day life, Wide Arches features a wide array of acoustic folk instrumentation and sounds. The band hopes you will enjoy the stories that they will be sharing, in a never-before seen format on September 12th at Small World Centre!

The evening will feature a special set of music by Toronto-based artist Prince Enoki. With new music soon to come out and another full album on the horizon, Prince Enoki will be sure to leave you mesmerized, with lush arrangements and beautiful lyricism (and a woodwind quartet to boot)! Enoki delves into chamber folk, ambient, and singer-songwriter genres, weaving together the captivating sounds of omnichord, mbira, Tuvan throat-singing, modular synth, strings, and woodwinds. Their music evokes dreams and heartfelt sentiment, drawing inspiration from Ravel, Ali Farka Touré, Laraaji, and Nick Drake. Collaborators include Laraaji, Carioca, and Jonathan Goldsmith.

The night will also feature a special opening set by Hamilton-based singer-songwriter, mystery tea (aka Evan Thompson)! With new music coming out this fall, be the first to get your sneak-preview of his new songs live and in person. His music conveys a clear connection to nature, brightness, optimism, and carries a sense of calmness. It is expressed through many themes, including love, story, perspective, reflection and wonder.

Come enjoy some wonderful music and beverages, and celebrate all the amazing new releases coming your way this September!
